The History of Wakefield, Quebec

Wakefield, Quebec was one of the first established European towns along the Gatineau River. It was founded in 1830 by mostly Irish immigrants, along with some British and Scottish settlers. Its roots are part of the reason that Wakefield is such a welcoming bilingual town.

Since it’s positioned along the Gatineau River, it became a well known place for those working in the lumber industry. Today it has flourished into a place perfect for artists, and those looking for inspiration. Where to Stay in Wakefield, Quebec

The best place to stay in Wakefield, Quebec, in my opinion, is Moulin Wakefield Mill Hotel & Spa. Not only is this because of the property’s incredible history, or even because it’s tucked away next to the scenic MacLaren Falls and a glen in the forest. Although these are excellent reasons, there are an incredible amount of amenities the Mill offers, making it the perfect place to escape for a wellness weekend.

The History of the Wakefield Mill

The Wakefield Mill Inn and Spa was first built in 1838 as a flour mill, powered by the rushing waters of the falls next to it. Over the next decade, the mill was sold, reappropriated and expanded into a sawmill and wool mill, and included a small general store.

It continued to operate as a mill for nearly 150 years, surviving and rebuilding from a fire during that time. It turned into a heritage museum in the 1980’s, and in the early 2000’s it became a destination spa and accommodation.

Amenities at the Wakefield Mill

The Wakefield Mill has an indoor/outdoor spa onsite. It also has an outdoor pool, several outdoor relaxation areas, and a bar and restaurant, both of which have a terrace and overlook the falls.

The rooms are spacious, and perfectly blend an embrace of the mill’s history with rustic, understated elegance. It’s a beautiful place to visit any time of year, and is a charming destination in its own right. It also has access to several nature trails and opportunities to embrace the forest that surrounds you when you stay here.

Take a Hike

There are so many places to walk around and hike in Wakefield. A popular walk is the Wakefield Rideau River walk along the path of the old train tracks to the famous Gendron Covered Bridge. This scenic red bridge feels like something out of a movie, and walking across the bridge offers beautiful views of the Gatineau River.

Stand up Paddle Board on the Gatineau River

This is an ideal activity if you’re visiting in the summertime, and have access to your own paddle board. The Gatineau River is a beautiful body of water, and the town of Wakefield is so nicely set along its shores.

An inflatable stand up paddle board is such a great item to have with you to make any getaway a momentary wellness getaway. There are places to get on the river behind the Wakefield General Store and Parc Geggie. You can park in one of the lots near the Wakefield Steam Train Turntable, or along the street in designated areas.

If you go out on the river, it’s important to note that the current can be quite strong in sections, so it’s best to stay close to the shoreline, go with a buddy, bring and wear your lifejacket, and make sure you have your bailer, safety rope and all required safety precautions with you on the water.

Get Lost kayaking at Eco Odyssey

Just a little beyond the village of Wakefield is Eco Odyssey. This nature escape offers a labyrinth of rivers and wetlands that feel like a real-life water maze. There are boats ideal for every group of people, like peddle boats or paddleboards, but the most efficient way to get around all stretches of the maze is to kayak.

When you arrive at Eco Odyssey, you’ll be given an orienteering map that you can use to locate the signs you’ve been instructed to follow on your way around the park. The surrounding Gatineau Hills are beautiful, along with the wildlife and plants you’ll spot as you paddle through this natural escape. Think of it as forest bathing, but the kind done on water. It is so relaxing, and a fun way to gamify being in nature.
